ORAL MEDICINE
Oral Medicine is the area of dentistry dedicated to the prevention, examination, diagnosis and management of conditions affecting the oral cavity, including the gums, oral mucosa, lips, tongue, teeth, jawbones and salivary glands.
Some systemic diseases may present signs in the mouth. Certain medicines can also cause changes such as dry mouth, oral lesions, inflammation or changes in the oral mucosa. Examining the oral cavity may therefore contribute to the early identification of problems requiring treatment, monitoring or referral to another healthcare professional.
Conditions assessed through Oral Medicine include persistent or recurring ulcers, white or red patches, lumps, changes affecting the tongue, burning sensations, dry mouth and salivary gland problems.
