Oral Medicine is the area of Dentistry dedicated to the observation, diagnosis and treatment of pathologies of the oral cavity involving soft tissues (gums, mucous membranes, lips and tongue), hard tissues (bones and teeth), as well as attached structures (salivary glands).
There is a wide variety of oral manifestations of systemic diseases or diseases related to the adverse effects of medications, often with a normal appearance and without associated symptoms.
This means that the Dentist is in a privileged position to make an early diagnosis. The oral cavity is an important structure of our body, involving functions as crucial as nutrition, speech and socialisation, and Oral Medicine works in close collaboration with the other areas of Dentistry.
