What are clear aligners?

Clear aligners are transparent, removable orthodontic appliances made to fit the patient’s teeth. They are worn in sequence to apply controlled forces and gradually move the teeth towards their planned positions.

As they are transparent and removable, aligners provide a discreet alternative to fixed braces. They can be removed for eating and oral hygiene but must be worn for the number of hours recommended by the dentist for treatment to progress as planned.

What problems can clear aligners correct?

Clear aligners may be used to treat different orthodontic problems, including certain cases of:

• Crowded teeth;
• Gaps between the teeth;
• Open bite;
• Deep bite;
• Crossbite;
• Class II or Class III malocclusion.

However, clear aligners are not suitable for every patient or every type of malocclusion. Their suitability depends on the patient’s age, oral health, the complexity of the required tooth movements and their ability to follow the treatment instructions. Some cases may be treated more predictably with fixed braces or a combination of orthodontic techniques.

Clear aligner treatment must be planned and monitored by a dentist, with regular appointments to assess progress and make any necessary adjustments.
